OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports Welcomes Dr. Matthew Anderson
Matthew C. Anderson, M.D., a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon and Birmingham native, will join OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports in September 2026. Dr. Anderson will see patients in Birmingham at 1801 Gadsden Highway and in Hoover at 118 Mars Hill Road. Dr. Anderson specializes in comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical care of conditions affecting the hand, wrist and elbow. He works closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to their needs and goals. His expertise includes, but is not limited to:
- Arthritis of the hand, wrist and elbow.
- Sports injuries of the hand, wrist and elbow.
- Fracture care and fixation.
- Overuse injuries of the hand and wrist.
- Compressive neuropathies like carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome.
- Dupuytren’s contracture treatment.
- Trigger finger release.
- Wrist arthroscopy.
- Ligament and tendon repair and reconstruction.
- Nerve repair.
- Hand therapy and nonsurgical care, including injections.

Dr. Anderson earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Prisma Health Upstate in Greenville, South Carolina, followed by fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and American Sports Medicine Institute.
