Dr. Matthew Anderson is a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon specializing in both nonsurgical and surgical care of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and elbow. He is dedicated to helping patients improve function and reduce pain through personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s goals, using both surgical and nonsurgical approaches to support recovery and return to daily activities.

Dr. Anderson is a native of Birmingham and grew up in Homewood. He attended The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He then received his Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Prisma Health Upstate in Greenville, South Carolina. Dr. Anderson returned to Birmingham to complete fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and American Sports Medicine Institute, where he gained advanced experience in the treatment of complex conditions of the upper extremity.

Dr. Anderson treats a wide range of hand and upper extremity conditions, including compression neuropathies like carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome, fractures and dislocations, overuse injuries/tendonitis, arthritis of the hand and wrist, Dupuytren’s contracture, and sports injuries of the hand, wrist, and elbow. He is experienced in performing carpal and cubital tunnel release, trigger finger release, and wrist arthroscopy as well as fracture fixation. His surgical expertise also includes ligament and tendon repair and reconstruction, nerve repair, and hand and wrist joint fusion and replacement. He also utilizes nonsurgical treatment options like hand therapy and corticosteroid injections to help treat his patients.

Dr. Anderson believes that each patient has a unique set of goals and deserves individualized care. Through shared decision-making, he works closely with patients to develop treatment plans that align with their needs and help them return to the activities that matter most. He values building strong relationships with his patients and collaborating with his care team to provide a supportive, patient-centered experience.

Outside of work, Dr. Anderson enjoys cooking and traveling with his wife Mel, exercising, playing tennis, and watching Alabama football.
