Dr. Mary Gilmer Featured in 280 Living for Athletic Achievements and Patient Care Philosophy

OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports partner and foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Mary Gilmer was recently profiled by 280 Living, a Birmingham-area publication covering people and places in the community.

The feature highlights Dr. Gilmer's dual role as both an orthopedic surgeon and a competitive endurance athlete, detailing her participation in ultra-distance trail running, mountain biking, downhill skiing and ultimate Frisbee. The article also traces her history with OrthoAlabama, which began in childhood when she was treated for a playground injury by Dr. Perry Savage at the practice's Birmingham office. She later joined the practice as a work-study student, continued through medical school at UAB, and now serves as a surgeon and board president.

In the piece, Dr. Gilmer discusses how her own experience navigating athletic injuries informs the way she counsels patients, encouraging sustainable movement over an all-or-nothing approach to fitness.

"Exercise is not static," Dr. Gilmer said. "We have to change as our body needs us to change. It doesn't mean stop."
