Compare Your Symptoms

It’s important to be seen by a doctor for a back, neck, or spine issue as soon as possible, especially before an issue worsens. The following signs and symptoms are common to back, neck, and spine conditions and injuries. If you recognize any of these issues, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with a doctor specializing in the back, neck, and spine:

  • Back pain that radiates down into your leg
  • Difficulty turning your head
  • Numbness
  • Pain when sitting
  • Sleep problems that are caused by neck pain, back pain, or spine pain
  • Swelling

One of our specialty-trained back, neck, and spine doctors may diagnose you with one of the following injuries or conditions:

  • Cervical disc disease
  • Coccydynia
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated disc
  • Kyphosis
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Radiculopathy
  • Sacroiliitis
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Spondylitis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Sports-related injury
  • Whiplash

The Back

Back pain is often caused by muscle inflammation, a traumatic injury, or an arthritic condition. Common back injuries and conditions include degenerative disc disease, pinched nerves, and herniated discs. For many people, back pain is a chronic problem that can no longer be relieved through nonsurgical treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medication. When these conservative options no longer provide relief, back surgery may be recommended.

Our back doctors at OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports specialize in a wide variety of nonsurgical and surgical treatment options to provide exceptional care focused on you. This includes lumbar disc replacement, lateral and anterior lumbar interbody fusions, micro lumbar discectomy, blocks, and injections.

The Neck

Traumatic accidents are one of the most common reasons why people with neck pain go to an orthopedic neck specialist. However, neck conditions can also develop over time due to repetitive motion as well as reappear years after an injury. Examples of neck injuries include pinched nerves, cervical myelopathy, and cervical radiculopathy. Sometimes, these neck issues can be treated with nonsurgical care; other times, a neck specialist may recommend surgical care as the best approach.

At OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports, our neck experts are dedicated to taking a team approach to finding the treatment option that is right for you and your neck disorder. They will first exhaust all applicable nonsurgical treatment options, such as injections, blocks, and physical therapy. If these conservative options fail to provide you with relief, our neck surgeons will work with you to determine which procedure is right for you and your needs.

The Spine

A spine surgeon or doctor can examine a patient’s spine and review X-rays to diagnose a spinal disorder and suggest the best treatment option. Nonsurgical methods could include over-the-counter medication for pain relief or to relax the back muscles, physical therapy, or a type of injection or block. If spine surgery is required, there are a variety of spine surgeries that can be used to help relieve pain, including spinal fusion, total disc replacement surgery, and surgeries that are minimally invasive.

Our spine surgeons at OrthoAlabama Spine & Sports are highly skilled surgical experts who have completed extensive training specifically in spine surgery. This includes minimally invasive spine surgery, which is a less invasive form of surgery that uses a smaller incision, reduces tissue trauma, and minimalizes the risk of infection. Minimally invasive surgery also provides patients with a faster recovery time.

Our spine surgeons have helped over 40,000 patients and proudly offer the following surgical procedures:

  • Cervical disc replacement
  • Endoscopic spinal decompression/discectomy
  • Microdiscectomy/laminectomy
  • Minimally invasive spine fusion
  • Minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion
